Open Art Classes

A casual and fun programme which includes experimental painting processes with various media such as alcohol inks and fluid acrylics. Focused attention to composition and line drawing with the basics of art elements and principles always being reiterated. An open art class means that learners are able to bring their own projects into a peer mentoring environment with professional mentorship too. It is a flexible space where invention and new media guide our projects.

Learn skills and techniques over a 6-week period with classes every Monday 6 – 9PM and Wednesday 9 – 12AM. Space is limited so book in advance.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Depending on how far along you are in your art practice, you will be aware of certain strengths and weaknesses. You may want to explore different media or push the boundaries of your current interests.

If you are a self-taught artist who would like to hone a particular skill set to further your art practice and find your unique visual language – then these highly personalised art classes are perfect for you.

If you would like to do this in an environment focused on learning new skills, I would love to encourage you to complete a quick questionnaire to understand which skills you would like to develop. Next, we’ll craft a programme around your specific goals. Once we have a clear programme outlined, the classes would take place at my studio in Sandton at a pace that suits you.

I understand artists as permeable people. We appropriate what we want to absorb or explore. We have a need to make our world make sense and in order to do this we must invent our own language. It is a made up language derived from experimentation and play. I love to see how other artists have invented their own visual language. This unique aspect of being an artist is a celebration of creativity and worth taking the time to unpack.

As artists, we often tend to think torturing ourselves in solitude will develop the depth and fortitude we need to be a true artist. But I don’t believe that, and neither should you. We need to be around each other to grow and find our own personal sense of expression through the interplay with people and environments.

I have a Masters Degree in Fine Arts and have been a practicing artist for 20 years. I would love to help you discover your true expression by sharing my individual process for producing sellable artworks. It will be a highly personalised collaboration between teacher and student.

Please note: You will need to purchase your own materials depending on what you would like to create, but I will guide you about what to purchase and bring.
